1930 wird Spoerri in Galati in Rumänien geboren. 1949 lernt er Jean Tinguely kennen. Von 1954-57 ist Spoerri erster Tänzer am Berner Stadttheater. Er publiziert die Zeitschrift material. 1959 zieht er nach Paris und steht in Kontakt mit Marcel Duchamp und Man Ray. Er gründet die Edition MAT. Zusammen mit Arman, César, Dufrêne, Hains, Raysse, Tinguely, Villeglé und Yves Klein unterzeichnet er 1960 das Manifest des Nouveau Réalisme. In seinen sog. Fallenbildern fixiert Spoerri reale Situationen, so wie er sie vorfindet. 1961 hat er seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galleria Schwarz in Mailand. Die Arbeit Kichkas Frühstück wird in der Ausstellung The Art of Assemblage im Museum of Modern Art in New York gezeigt und angekauft. 1962 entwickelt er die Ausstellung Dylaby im Amsterdamer Stedelijk Museum, zusammen mit Niki de Saint Phalle, Robert Rauschenberg und Jean Tinguely. 1968 eröffnet er die erste Eat Art Gallery. 1983 wird er Professor an der Kunstakademie München. 1990 würdigt ihn das Centre Pompidou in Paris mit einer Retrospektive. 1997 wird sein Künstlergarten Il Giardino in der Toskana eingeweiht. 2001 hat er eine Retrospektive im Museum Tinguely in Basel. 2009 eröffnet sein Ausstellungshaus in Hadersdorf am Kamp.

 

Born in 1930 in Galati, Romania, Spoerri became friends with Jean Tinguely in 1949. He was the principle dancer at the Bern Stadttheater from 1954–1957, he published the journal material . In 1959 he moved to Paris, where got to know Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. He founded Edition MAT. He signed the Nouveau Réalisme manifest together with Arman, César, Dufrêne, Hains, Raysse, Tinguely, Villeglé, and Yves Klein in 1960. During this time, Spoerri began capturing real situations in his snare pictures. He had his first solo exhibition in Galleria Schwarz in Milan in 1961, and the work Kichka’s Breakfast was shown in the The Art of Assemblage exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art, New York (which also added it to its collection). In 1962 he took part in the Dylaby exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (with Niki de Saint Phalle, Rauschenberg, and Tinguely). In 1968 Spoerri opened the Eat Art Gallery. He became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1983. The Centre Pompidou in Paris honored him with a retrospective exhibition in 1990. His artist’s garden Il Giardino opened in Tuscany in 1997. In 2001 he had a retrospective in the Museum Tinguely in Basel. Opening of the Ausstellungshaus Spoerri at Hadersdorf am Kamp in 2009.
