1934 wird Aubertin in Fontenay-aux-Roses, Hauts-de-Seine geboren. 1955-57 studiert er Malerei in Paris. Im Frühjahr 1957 lernt er Yves Klein kennen, mit dem er sich rasch anfreundet. 1958 entstehen erste monochrom rote Strukturarbeiten, 1960 die ersten, von roter Farbe überzogene Nagelbilder. 1961 schafft er seine ersten seriellen Streichholz- und Feuerbilder. Seit dieser Zeit ist Aubertin an zahlreichen ZERO-Ausstellungen beteiligt. Die Farben Rot (Feuer) und Schwarz (Rauch) dominieren fortan seine Arbeiten. 1965 verfasst er das Manifest Je suis un réaliste. 1977 nimmt Aubertin an der documenta 6 teil. 1991 verlegt er seinen Wohnsitz nach Reutlingen. 1997 beginnt er die Serie Nouveau Rouge. 2014-15 sind Werke von Aubertin in den international vielbeachteten ZERO-Ausstellungen im Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, dem Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin und dem Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam zu sehen. 2015 stirbt Aubertin in Reutlingen.

 

Bernard Aubertin was born in 1934 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, Hauts-de-Seine, France. He studied painting in Paris from 1955 to 1957. In the spring of 1957, he got to know Yves Klein, and they quickly became friends. He created his first structural monochromatic red works in 1958 and his first nail pictures covered in red paint in 1960. In 1961, he produced his first serial pictures with matches and fire. At the same time, he began participating in many ZERO exhibitions. The colors red (fire) and black (smoke) also dominated his works from that point forward. He wrote the manifesto Je suis un réaliste in 1965 and took part in documenta 6 in 1977. He moved to Reutlingen, Germany, in 1991 and began his Nouveau Rouge series of works in 1997. His works were exhibited in the internationally celebrated ZERO exhibitions in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2014 and 2015. Bernard Aubertin died in Reutlingen in 2015.
